Large hover - Volucella Inanis

This one must have just emerged as it was in pristine condition. So shiney and having a good feed on a freshly flowering echinops What a gorgeous hover they are.

Stunning detail Linda, their bodies are very translucent, you can see their inner working
I notice the flower it's on although I don't know the name of it, is a great flower for bees. I have seen these timing with bees all over them, can you tell me what the flower is please?

i NEVER see hovers this big. In fact I rarely ever see them at all. And when I do see them, they are very small. Like 2mm in size. Any reasons why that may be?

Thanks Alby. I am sure I can get more detail from the body as only a couple of the shots I took may have a tiny bit of cropping to remove unwanted areas, they are really gorgeous arent they.

The plant is ECHINOPS. They have the spikey head for a long time, then it starts to change colour slightly and then the lilac flowers start to open. I am going to get some more

They do vary at what time of the year they appear, and of course its a case of actually spotting them when they do appear. I saw one of these 2 weeks ago in our front garden, I went in to get the camera and it had disappeared and I never saw it again. This is only the second one so far I have seen, but maybe its a case of me not looking hard enough in the past. So do keep looking because if you have hovers, you may well have these too.
