Last week I got the chance to use a Canon 180mm L Macro lens. It is an excellent lens.
I'm no macro expert by any means but I thought I'd share a few shots I took with it.

I'm wondering how the Canon 100mm Macro lens compares to it.

looks sharp, I imagine its quite tough to hold steady at 1:1 without a support?

only the flower was shot using a tripod. I have nothing to compare it to though. The only other macro I have tried was with a set of tubes. Both were fairly hard to hold steady.

Looks like it is a superb lens looking at your results.

Lovely shots - suspect you'll get the same sharpness with the 180 as the 100 but supposedly you get better bokeh with the 180 but think the 100 would be a lot easier to hand hold.

Very nice indeed. The sharp detail is amazing. My 180mm just arrived! I even loved my test shots - though they were of nothing important. But after looking at yours, I can't wait to get outside with it! I have to admit that its heavy, so I will have to drag the tripod along.

180L is an excellent build lens. Heavy in size and price but i think it worth every penny. :)

thanks for the comments.
I'm going to try to borrow a 100mm before purchasing anything. The 180 is a great lens though. Even for non-macro shots it really is a superb lens. I'd like to try the mpe (??) too but my skillz aren't quite "there" yet.
One thing I'm wondering about though. With the 100mm do you need to get closer to the subject then with the 180...because even with the 180 I found I had to get fairly close.
