I found some really nice drops this morning, so I stuck an orange poppy behind it and set the tripod up.

Now, I had a great view through the viewfinder (life's ALWAYS great through the viewfinder of a 5D), but could I get that same view onto the CF card? No...

Was either over or underexposing, I couldn't get the drops into good focus (weird situation where the EV- shots were great in focus, but the EV0 ones looked fuzzy even though I hadn't touched the focus at all).

I worked out that the overexposure could be down to a weird lens-flare (even though the sun was almost directly behind the camera), so I cupped my hand around the lens and got the best of a bad bunch...

Still not happy with it though.

Eh? Is that the trick? Doing it in software?

The thought didn't occur to me, I always assumed it was straight photography!!

Good try :)
Couple of points- the dewdrops I do are on grass on the ground so I can rest the lens on my hand which makes a fairly stable base plus the dewdrops are not moving with the slightest gust of wind which drops on a spiders web are liable to do.
Pete - the only trick is to extend the DOF using focus stacking to make sure you get both the drop and refracted image both in focus- normally they are not in the same focal plane.
