Whilst on a recent trip through Cambodia, caught some different small creatures with my immitation macro lens 24-105, which I had only just got. I'd one day like a MPE-65, and see how well Live view works with the focussing. All these were taken with 20D (I think... 1D III was used for other scenes)

Nice shots and it goes to show that you don't need a macro lens to get good photographs of bugs. Just out of curiosity, what's the magnification of the 24-105?

Thanks for the comments.

I didn't use any tubes.

The dragonfly is cropped a little bit, and the ant shot is nearly 100% crop, with the others as they were.

(These bugs were pretty big! Especially that ant..)

Thanks again,

Ant was probably 20mm large

Back home in NZ, our ants are only around 5-7mm max

I use the same lens on my 5D almost exclusively. I purchased the Canon macro filter 500D and it is amazing what can be done with it.

Nice shots!

Thanks for the info, if I run out of money, I could go for something simpler like that.

I'm glad I didn't buy a macro before my travels. I wouldn't have used it much, and my gear was already wayyy overweight for checkins and also carrying around, got very tiring in 36*C + humid heat.
