The battle of David and Goliath took place today on one of my garden candle lanterns.

Awesome... I'm really surprised that the wasp didn't manage to break out of that web.

Very good sequence there.

Thanks Pete, I thought it was going to at one point but I guess the spider must have bitten the wasp, it did seem to be staying back at certain times supposedly waiting for the venom to take over.

The more I look at the enlargement the more I'm convinced it's the maxillary and labial palps and the tongue that you can see. Maybe someone here in the know will tie this up. I might go out and get the wasp and dissect it. :-)

Fantastic series Alby. Spider silk is incredibly strong for it's diameter. I think this is proof.

If my memory serves me correctly, the wasp isn't dead either, just paralysed. Sorry for being so gory.

Hiya Alby,

Excellent series of shots/captures, #1 is my favorite,

I also was wondering what the Wasp had in it's mouth.

I'm not sure it's a Spider as that looks like Antennae in #1 to segmented for legs ?? given there's a lot of flying Ants about at the mo & the shape of the abdomen could it be a Flying Ant ?? just a thought

Cheers for now
Mark

Thanks for the comments Mark. I'm 100% sure it is it's mouth palps.

Thanks for the comment Bernie And I agree with you spiders silk is strong and your right the venom does paralysed but not straight away I imagine that why they wrap them.
