The end users won't be able to make it a standard unless there's equipment that produces files in that format. Until there are cameras that use it, it'll remain Steve Ballmer's fantasy.
I realize that. I may be oversimplifying it, but several things have become defacto standards for the silliest reasons. If Microsoft pushes it hard, there is a good chance the hardware manufacturers will include it on their cameras. It might be a little while, until Vista is the dominant OS, but it happens. As I mentioned, WordPerfect is a relic of the past, and so is Netscape. DNG is pretty much sponsored by Adobe, so unless the user has Adobe software there is no compelling reason to use it. So it might be a while, and it might not happen, but the current JPEG standard will fizzle out sooner or later, and then what?
Have Fun,
