In June I was talking to two people at an event they both had my camera and lens the D30 and 100-400. They both told me I needed a polarizing filter to take pictures of the baby pileated in the woods. I ordered the canon circular polarizing filter 77mm it arived today but does not mention being compatable with that lens. If it is, is it okay to use with the uv filter or should I remove before I use the polarizing filter? Thanks

sarahbn, I always take my UV filter off before putting the polarizer on. Not sure why, but I think it has something to do with a possible interaction between the two filters, and then, again, it may be just a habit from old film days. My suggestion, try it both ways and see if there is a problem.

Cheers,

WesternGuy

You only need to match the filter thread size of the lens with the filter.

As far as using a UV filter with the CPL goes, you're better off with as little extra glass as possible being stacked on the end of your lens. More glass means more opportunities for unwanted reflections (it may seem fine under normal conditions but problems may be more likely in more extreme conditions). You can also get vignetting stacking too many filters (though two are probably OK).
