Last week I had my entire camera kit stolen out of the trunk of my car. List of stolen items: Canon 20D, Canon 17-40 L, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Canon 50mm f/2.8, Canon 100-400 L, feisol tripod, arcatech ultimate ball head, Lowe Pro Computrecker, and all my CF cards.

Luckily everything is insured and I should be getting full replacement cost.

If you had $5500 to build a new kit what would you buy???

BTW, I plan on waiting for the 40D release before buying a new body.

5D, 24-70, 70-200 (which ever one you like), 50 1.4, 580 EX, tripod, and other accessories. Save a bit for the 100-400L. You'll miss it.

Ouch, that sucks.

If that were my budget, I would get:

EOS 5D
EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM
EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM

B&H total: $ 5,407.95 :)

Then I would pay out of pocket for CF cards, grip, flash, stands, etc.

Thanks for the quick replies. Here is some more info.

I shoot mostly landscape and wildlife.

I have my first baby on the way and am interested in a low light, fast lenses. The 17-55 f2.8 IS seems like a perfect baby lens, but it only works on a EF-S mount. 5D and 24-70 f2.8 would be great for a baby, but there is no IS.

I was thinking of going with a 40D, 10-22, 17-55, and 100-400. That might break the bank a little, haven't priced it all out yet. I do have a bit of heartburn over buying EF-S lenses. They get great reviews, but I am afraid I treat my gear more roughly than an EF-S lens could handle. I travel 180 days a year and my camera goes on every trip.

I hadn't thought much about the 5D. A 24-70 lens on a 5D would go as wide as my 17-40 did on my 20D. Not sure about the 70-200... I rarely used that focal length on my 20D. I think I would opt for the 100-400 L or a 17-40 L instead. I love wide angle, and I really want to be able to get wider than my my 20D setup went. However, I really liked my 100-400. On a full frame body I am afraid the 100-400 wouldn't be as useful.

Thanks for the replies. Keep them coming.

You don't need the IS with the 24-70. It's plenty fast in low light. You can't substitute anything in the price range for the 5D. It's a great value.

If I may ask what type of insurance do you have. I am shopping for one now since I have been informed by my car insurance company that they don't pay for stuff that is not nailed/screwed down to the car. Sorry I don't mean to take obver yout thread, just looking for info. Thanks and sorry about your loss.

do you have homeowner's or renter's insurance. I went thru these people for a "valuable personal property" policy

If you really want to wait for a new body, just grab yourself another cheap 20D. 16-35 f/2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8L, 50 f/1.4, 1.4x TC with a 430 or 580 speedlite. That should be around 5k.

Hope you have the serial numbers recorded. Stuff can be tracked down if it pops up on Ebay.

Yup, very good idea to do. I've had two friends who found their motorcycles on ebay that way and both of them recovered it. Definitely look there for the 1st month.

Terrible news, but at least your covered by insurance. Is it your car insurance or home owners insurance who is covering the gear?

I agree, GET THE 5D!!!!
