Shot the Beach Boys last weekend. I know there's only 2 of them left in the band, but they're still called the Beach Boys. :) They actually sounded really good. Mike Love moves a little more slowly than years past, but they still played non-stop for over 2 hours. Plenty of light, so I can't lean on that for an excuse. Full gallery here (external link).

1. I know, clipped elbows but I liked it.

One case wher I don't mind a distracting BG: It kinda (faintly) looks like palm trees in #1 ;)
I don't mind the clipping, but I would have lightened the face to give it more attention.

Because of the high contrast, most (midtones) appear a bit too dark.

Thanks, I think you hit the nail on the head. I think I got in a rut with my PP. I re-did a couple and upped the midtones:

i like 1 and 5, though w/ the reddish, muddy colors predominating, i would have done a B/W conversion

Thanks. I'll try that. I haven't done much in terms of bw conversions. I shot Taylor Hicks and processed a couple quickly for people on my message board. One just struck me that it would look better bw, so I gave it a shot here (external link). I think I will play with it a little more. The reddish lighting did bug me with #1.

thanks for the input.

one thing i've done a bit too is to open a curves layer, then select the R channel, and pull down the midtones a bit. that helps to desaturate just that channel.

You could also try the channel mixer:
Red channel: R=90%, G= 7%, B= 3% or so...
