Hi guys,

I'm not actually sure what this is -- only thing I can think of is some sort of wingless wasp. It's about an inch long and has huge mandibles. I sent the pics to a local entomologist friend of mine, but thought perhaps one of the resident experts here may have an idea until my friend gets back to me.

I spotted it climbing up the blade of some grass while taking a shot of this crab spider with prey.

Notice all the tiny flies on the bee's body? :confused:

no they are just the usual big maggoty beetle grubs. This is a ...............(i'm hunting the web)

give up but guess at an exotic species of Rove Beetle.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, still waiting for a reply from Jack.
The closest so far that I can come to is a female sp. of some weird flower wasp, but finding it very difficult to find any decent pics for comparison.

Once I get confirmation I'll let you all know.

Also, wasps and ants are in the same order so I wouldn't be surprised if that guy is some sort of in-betweener.

Thanks for all the comments.

Well I still havent gotten in touch with Jack about it's ID, but I'm now starting to see why there are doubts about it being a female flower wasp. Went out around the same area again today, and was lucky enough to spot a male flower wasp (unsure of sp) flying around, while mating with a female. I can definately see now the size comparison and the differences in the thorax & face.

The female is about 10mm in length...

I guess it's back to the drawing board for now -- atleast until friggin Jack gets back to me! :rolleyes:
