Think whilst ants and wasps are taxonomically related a wingless wasp is not an ant.
eg the shot below is a wingless wasp and not an ant- agree it looks similar to an ant (that's what I thought it was at first).

Just thought I'd let any of you who are curious know -- It is actually female wasp, just no clue which species. Good chance it's a new species, it's a shame I lost it in the grass... I did go to collect it in a empty film container that I always carry for these occasions, but I didn't want to risk it stinging/biting me, so I tried to hold it by the end of the grass it was holding onto. Unfortunately as I began walking back to my bag it dropped down into the long grass and I couldn't find it again. http://www.flickr.com/photos/16358539@N00/
