Hi all,
As it says above. I am not sure at all if I should stick with my ageing D60 with my only two lenses: 70-200mm F4L IS, and a old 17-35mmF2.8L, and with the money to purchase a couple of other lenses.
I am looking at the EF100mm f2.8 USM Macro, and the EF-S 10-22mm f3.5-4.5, (not sure if it will work with my D60), and a 1.4xEFII converter.

Or to stick with my only two lenses, and buy a 5D with the battery grip? I have almost pushed the button on the 5D and grip, but I have decided to post here to see what some thoughts are from others. BTW I have noticed that the 5D has gone up in price in the last few months even taking into account the rebates that were offered a few weeks ago. (I should have bought it then!!) :(
Any info, advice will be most appreciated.:)
Ben

PS:- I mainly take landscape, and people, and general shots. I used to be a sports photographer until my eyes caused me problems, so this is just for hobby reasons.

It would be a no brainer for me, 5D all the way. The difference in IQ, resolution and ISO performance will amaze you! The FF sensor and viewfinder will also be a welcome change :D
I shoot everything from landscapes to portraits, the improvement for me was a substantial one.
I recently upgraded from a 30D and never looked back. So if I were you I'd pull the trigger :D

The pictures from your D60 bother you? Anything else about it bother you? I have both (and an intervening 20D) and except where I need high-ISO settings, rapid camera response, more AF points, or a bigger buffer, the D60 would handle most of my needs. I, personally, need all of those, which is why I upgraded to the 20D. I went with the 5D as it got me ultra-wide without changing my existing lenses (leaving me potentially with a lens that would work on one camera and not the other). If you're happy with the 5D 's performance, pick up the lenses. But forget the EF-S 10-22. It will not mount on the D60, which doesn't have an EF-S mount. Sigma has a 10-20, and Tamron and Tokina have various 11-12 up to 18-24 mm. Those lenses will cover only the APS-C sensor of your D60, or a 30D or DR XTi. Sigma also has a 12-24 which covers full frame, so would be able to follow you up to a 5D, shjould you later go that way.

In most cases, I would say stick with the camera and get lenses but I think the lenses that you have are fine and get the 5D. The 17-35 is a great lens and was Canon's premiere wide lens until the 16-35 arrived. I owned it for 4 years and I was never disappointed with its IQ and build quality. The 70-200 f/4 is no slouch either!
That being said, I used to own the 5D and traded it in for a 20D, a 10-22 and (with another $800) a Macbook Pro. For the PJ work I do, I didn't really feel the need for the 5D. Most newspapers are still using the Mark II so 8 megapixels was enough.
And as for the alternatives to the 10-22, I have read that the 3rd party alternatives are not up to par. I tested a friends Sigma 12-24 next to the 10-22 and the Canon won hands down.
Let us know what you plan to do.

While the image quality of your D60 is still quite good - its probably time for a new body. I don't know that you necessarily have to go all the way to a 5D - why not a 30D or even a used 20D?

If you even had a 10D I would say stick with the body and get lenses - but the D60 is getting quite long in the tooth.

I'd say it depends on what you shot and you'r style of shooting

Myself I shoot mostly fashion, glamour and nudes and for me upgrading from the 20D to the 5D just made more sense then upgrading my 50 1.4 to a 50 1.2 or my 85 1.8 to a 85 1.2.

Seems like the best approach... go to a 20D and get some lenses too.

Thanks for all the replies.
I am still unsure as to what to do. But might go for a 30D and can also get the Macro lense and converter as well. Keep the 30D for a while, perhaps a year or so, and then upgrade to the 40D.

But when I wake up in the morning, I will probably have changed my mind yet again! :)

I used full frame 35 mm film all my life, but fell in love with the 1.6 crop format when I got my D60 because it makes my longer lenses so much more useful. I hope I never have to go back to a full frame camera like the 5D, but that Canon keeps improving the EF-S cameras.

There were several things I did not like about the D60. One was the lack of a super-wide lens. Another was the long time it took the camera to wake up when you turn it on or try to rouse it out of sleep mode. I bought the 20D shortly after it came out which gives almost instant "on" and has other improvements such as better auto focus, more frames per second and a larger buffer which are all useful for sports. The lack of a super wide lens was answered by the EF-S mount and the 10-22. (Sorry, the 10-22 will not work on a D60.)

If I was still using the D60 I would consider upgrading to the 30D or wait a little while longer to see what the next model will bring. Probably prices for the 30D will drop after the new model comes out and the stores have to clear out inventory.

Your lenses will go great with a 5D, you may want to pick up a 50mm/1.8 or 1.4 cheap for the gap in the middle of the two on FF else you should be set. No reason to upgrade great glass like that.

I shoot a D30 and 30D, the 30D or 5D will blow your mind. Keep the D60 however, a second body comes in handy.

I'd get the 5D, sell the D60 and the 17-35 to save up for a 24-70. Then you'll have 24-200mm covered.

One more question. Do you think I will really see a difference in IQ from either a 30D or 5D?
Is my D60's quality been totally "blown out of the water" with these newer cameras? If so, I will make my mind up, and get either the 30D or 5D tomorrow.

FYI I had been out of photograpy for a few years until I stopped off here, and it got me going again. Thanks!! :D

As God is my witness, YES. A big difference in IQ. You'll be blown away by the 5D.

Right, thats it! ;)
Im 99% of the way there! Also my thinking is that it seems that the 5D wont be superseeded for a good few months, so I will at least have a year with this version, and sell it on, and purchase the new 5D MKII about 6 months after it comes out.
On the other hand..............

With the 5D, you'd also be covered on the wide end with your present lenses. 17mm on a FF is REALLY wide. When I bought my 5D, I sold off the 10D but decided to keep the 30D as a backup, but also for the reach factor.
