I want to scan a fair number of 35mm slides to form a record of a past holiday for the benefit of a relative. Not possessing a flatbed or a dedicated film scanner at the moment, what would be recommended (at a reasonable price) for this purpose ? I have seen the Plustek 7200 advertised fairly cheaply but have also read some "minus" comments about it. Would a flatbed do the job ?

I have a Canon 9950. Not sure how much it costs as I do not pay much attention to that only that it does the job. IT is an excellent scanner that lets you scan multiple slides at a time.

I have the Epson Perfection 4490 flatbed. It does a good job and includes "Digital ICE" software for automatically fixing scratches and dust. Its VERY slow for doing high-res scans though. If you're going to be doing a lot of high-res scans, you might want to consider a faster dedicated model.

Got the Canoscan 8600F, with comments in another thread on this forum. Does the Epson 4490 have problems with 'chrome" type slides, such as Kodachrome and Ektachrome?

Haven't done any 'chrome" type slide scanning with the 4490. Sorry.

My father in law has this scanner. It does a very good job & is quick if you don't use scratch/dust removal functions. When I used it I washed & dried negatives 1st then there was minimal spot cloning left to work on. I have also used a flatbed for negatives but was never pleased with results.
