Hi Guys

I am looking at buying a Sigma 70-200mm f2.8 EX DG Lens & these ebay shops have them at what appears to be a fantastic price. Has anyone had any dealings with them & if so, what was the service like? (the feedback looks good).

Any feedback, good or bad greatly appreciated!

Considering the number of transactions the feedback is quite good - Just bear in mind you may get clobbered for import duty and VAT if customs get their hands on the packages - This can almost bring the prices in line with the UK sometimes.

Some HK shops will reimburse you afterwards with these charges but I have no experience with this myself.

Also not sure on how valid the 'international' warranty is in the UK

I'm sure others will chime in with their experiences.

Thanks for the reply Kevin.

I see from your gear list that you have this lens, how do you find it? I have been using my old Canon 75-300mm IS zoom lens, however it is now showing it's age (I have worked out that I bought it around 10 years ago now!) & is not fast enough for the ice hockey matches I shoot in the winter.

I see the Sigma lens as a cost effective optiuon.

I have the previous model (without the word 'Macro' written on it) althought I believe they have changed the glass slightly.

I think it's a great lens, considering it's f/2.8 it's a good price, I couldn't really justify the extra expense of the Canon, and I don't particularly like white lenses :-)

I've never compared it to the Canon because I haven't had one to compare it with. It seems to get pretty good reviews from most people who own or test it.

I'ts not exactly lightweight, but that's the price you pay for a fast lens of this range I suppose.

Both sellers seem to be of a high standard. those ratings are very good for a company with that many transactions.

Bear in mind that the first one (urgalaxy) offers a 'no VAT / duty' guarantee, so that if you get hit, then they will cover the cost. The other one leaves it to you to pay it, if necessary. This could make a big difference!

Many parcels get through without charge, the customs just take a number at random to charge as they don't have the manpower to check every parcel. However, there is a reasonable chance of being hit and could come to a fair amount with this item (around £100 with collection fees added). The actual charge assessed can be very hit and miss and often they charge more than they should, I have twice been charged the VAT and duty percentages using the dollar amount as sterling (i.e. a $50 dollar item is charged as if worth £50 not £25). I can tell you now, the paperwork and appeal process makes it not worth kicking up a fuss about unless a quite high value item. I think they try to get you to give up before getting to the point they give you your money back.

Having a repayment guarantee saves worrying about the possible extra cost.

I purchased from HK Supplies but got caught for handling charge by UPS, which made the item more expensive than if I had bought from the UK. I am also waiting on an order from UR Galaxy HK after almost 3 weeks, contacted them twice without a reply, beware .

I've been buying on ebay for years but anymore with all the scams and crooks on it, I'm afraid to buy anything off of ebay anymore.... Heck, I'm half way afraid to buy from a lot of online stores.

My 2 cents..

Why not got for some L glass?

The Canon EF 70-200mm F/4.0 L USM from Jessops comes to £500. Slightly bit more than the eBay prices on a Sigma lens but more worthwhile?

I shoot at ice hockey matches & my old Canon 75-300mm IS lens that I am still using (after buying it around 10 years ago!) is too slow. Any pics I take have to be at a high ISO & I find myself relying on noise removal plugins in Photoshop to make the images any good.

The Sigma lens seems to be a good lens at a reasonable price (I have had nothing but good feedback from people I know who have the lens, or indeed on this forum).

Do let me know how it works out. I might consider one myself. :)

I bought my RebelXT and a bunch of lenses from ebay.. think the selelrs name was camerasonthego something like that. The whole experience was great and I got an awesome deal.. although not sure I would be to trusting anymore because like krs2fer says, there are so many scams out there now.
