The wife and I are thinking of getting a DSLR and are looking at the Rebel XT and XTi as are first.
Can someone give me some pros and cons to both over the other.
Thank you for your input ahead of time.

The Xti is newer version with more MP and has the dust removal system if that works I don't know. They say the IQ of pictures are better if you have the money go for the Xti if not then the Xt is just fine alot of good pictures have been posted from either camera even with the kit lens.

They're both great cameras, and I've owned both. The only significant difference between them IMHO is that the XTi focusses more accurately and consistently with fast lenses (f/2.8 or better). I really noticed the difference with my 100mm f/2 lens when I was using it wide open.

xti hands down, owned both and for many reasons the xti is worth the slightly higher premium.

I owned both as well and if cost is not a factor, go for the XTi. It has the same focus system as the 30 and is noticeably quicker and more accurate. The larger screen on the back is a definite improvement and the IQ is just a tad better. If cost is a factor, all these advantages are so minor that the cost should play the #1 deciding role. The bottom line is that at print even at 8x10 you will not be able to notice the difference between the two. In fact, I doubt you will notice a differance in an 11x16 as well but I never compared those.

9 pt autofocus, dust removal, larger lcd, ISO displayed on the screen, 10MP vs 8.

As for IQ, I have noticed no difference between the 2. in fact testing the two I would say the XTi has a touch mroe noise at ISO 800-1600. That said though the XTi is easily be my choice.

Go for the Xti if your funds allow. I have been using the XT for over a year now and have no regrets buying it. From what I understand from others that have used the Xti, it has made a great camea even better.

Most certainly does...

I've had both, and have had NO NEED to even think about dust on the sensor with the XTi/400D

XTi is a GREAT camera; you'll have loads of fun with it.

XT is good - but now out-of-date; why buy old technology - unless cost really is a factor...

See the posts above for the rest of the benefits...

Good luck;

Cheers;

How is it out of date, that just sounds bad when people say that.

As I'm telling my friend who is getting into this hobby and asked me the same thing. You pretty much will get the same quality picture from a xt and an xti.

I suggested an xt, either new or used and then buy a lens with the extra money he saved from the xt.

While I won't argue that it has a bigger lcd screen, I don't really find that useful at all. The only time I'm really looking into my lcd screen is when I want to go back and preview a shot, and the xt is more the big enough.

The dust system helps but is not a replacement for sensor cleaning. Try the blue sky test at F/22 and if you have had your 400 for over a month, you will see specks. If you import the pic to photoshop and do an "Auto Levels" on it they will pop out even more. The shake system seems to handle the dust that a bulb blower would get rid of, but pollen and stray lubricant is just to sticky for it.

i've owned the xt and upgraded to 30d recently

if you are pondering between xti and xt, i say go for the xti.. carpenter listed all the differences but really i'd buy xti over xt just for the much improved autofocus and larger burst buffer and the larger LCD display. these three imo justify the slightly higher cost difference because you'll use these features frequently. i surely dunno how i went shooting without these features on my 30D.

I have both...XTi has my vote. Mainly nice large LCD to proof images. Better menu usability. Better focus (maybe)...in low light yes.
