Had both a hawker and a couple of female darters in the garden recently and then found a different hawker dying unfortunately (the last shot).

I don't know how you manage f8 like in the fifth one down. I would love to take advantage of the sweet spot on my lens, but I'm not able to accomplish what you do. TCProimages

Brian V. Thanks Brian. Interesting, so you let the camera select the aperture. At ISO 200 with the shutter speed locked, I guess this helps keep it from getting too large. TCProimages

At ISO 200 with the shutter speed locked, I guess this helps keep it from getting too large. You're a master, I've learned a lot reading your posts. Thanks. I haven't been able to get great natural light macros, but I'm working on it. Still learning with natural light shots. Prefer to make sure the shutter speed is good than to get shaky shots. I was able to shoot these at ISO200 but would up the ISO to 400 or 800 if the aperture got too low. I also shoot at -.66Ev with natural light to stop blown highlights but that may just be a characteristic of my 350D. http://www.flickr.com/photos/lordv/

The first one is a southern hawker; maybe a male but can't be sure as it's not fully mature and I can't make out the tail to make a better judgement. The last one is a female of the same species. I hope she laid a good many eggs before dying.
