If the rumors are true this is the new kit lens. Im gonna guess it to be about $250-$300 if it keeps the same build, optics and focus motor. If the 40D comes in between $1299 and $1399(30D intro Price) I think the kit price is going to be to high compared to the competition. Pentax, Olympus etc.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

I hope that they improve the optics a bit - rumors when the XTi came out was that the lens was very marginal on the 10.1 MPX sensor.

As an attempt to keep up with in-body IS offered by some manufacturers I guess this makes sense... I'm prepared to believe this one... ;)

Nothing say that because a lens is priced at $300 on its own that it will not simply add $200 or less to a kit.

Canon would be smart to price it higher as a separate purchase than way lower as a loss leader with kit.

The 40D is not an entry level model, so Canon is not going to play the bargin basement price like with the Drebel line. That line is the $600 model lines. The 40D is in the $1500 model line. I have no idea how much comparable models from Pentax and Olympus cost. And remember that the d80, d40, d40x, and a100 are all in the entry level class (sub $1000) against the XTi. Canon can afford to make the kit lens with IS and keep the kit price around $1500 to $1600.

What makes a camera 'entry level' or some other designation, has little or nothing to do with the price point.

Based solely on this way of thinking, the G7 is a step up from the XT.

In the persuit of total contentment, Canon does not help :)

I would love to see a new IS "kit" lens! I think that most all lenses should have it.

I do think they should include in-body IS soon as the market is strongly moving that way. I would like it as those lenses without IS would benefit with it. It would simply be a matter of the camera automatically shutting off the in-body IS if a IS lens is mounted. Simple. Plus, research shows that the longer lenses don't really benefit from in-body IS so they need IS.

You're wrong. You're comparing discontinued models for one. For dSLRs, entry level is sub $1000 which will have fewer features and lesser performance the the $1400+ class, e.g. more buttons, switches, wheels, spot meter, bigger buffer, better viewfinders.

Depends on the brand, the Pentax K10D is miles ahead of the K100D and would qualify as pro-sumer yet it only cost $790, Sure some things are not as good as the 30D but some things are better, Body IS, slave flash controlled by body, weather sealed, all cross type sensors, TAV mode etc but it does lag behind in AF seed and frame rate when compaired to the 30D.

Well, looks like the 18-55 IS is no longer a rumor.

[URL="http://[URL]www.amazon.com/Canon-EF-S-18-55mm-3-5-5-6-Lens/dp/B000V5K3FG/"]

It looks like the IS price drops have begun. This thing has IS and USM and they are gonna sell them for $199 ! This means the 17-85 and 17-55 2.8 will have to drop in price (and all IS eventually) Thank you Sigma and Sony!!! I have said for a while now that the combination of in-body IS gaining popularity and the new 3rd party IS lenses will force Canon and Nikon to drop their IS prices, and it looks like the price wars start now.

Rebel XTi, 430ex, Tammy 28-75, nifty fifty, kit lens, tons of reading, not enough practice, and two gorgeous subjects (my kiddies)

There is no "keeping up". In-body IS is inferior.

I think that "staying ahead" is the more appropriate phrase. :)

I hope Canon have improved the optics since the original 18-15 is not up to high resolution demands.
