The Canon software that comes with the camera can get the owner. For anything else "exifer" will do (google it).

To set the owner name in camera, you need the EOS Utility software that came with your camera. It's a little trick to find the menu to chance the settings, but the software manual will walk you through it or you can search the forum here and there are a number of threads that explain the process and what to look for.

If you don't have FireWire, you're not going to be able to manage. But there are 2 types of FireWire connectors - a big one with a tombstone-shaped cross-section and a small one like the one on your 1Ds. Does your computer have either one?

the laptop has the same shape connector (and it fits) as the camera .... as i inspect, i note it says 1394 on the laptop port.
(i told you i was thick ?)

the other end of the cable has a usb type plug which i do not recognise.

cheers for now, hopefully.

Get yourself a 4-pin to 4-pin 1394 cable and you'll be able to connect your camera to the laptop. The cable that's supplied with the camera is a 4-pin to 6-pin cable which is of no use to you.

Got the Canon software loaded? No? load it (camera is not connected at this time).

Turn on camera. Connect Camera and PC FireWire ports. PC should find and recognize camera.

Open EOS Utilities. Click on Camera Settings/Remote Shooting. Enter Owner's Name in the field provided.

Without knowing which version of the software you're using, Ican't be any more precise.

Thanks very much, jon ... your help is very much appreciated.

i have now downloaded loads of stuff, ie:
Canon WIA Driver v 5.5.0
EOS Capture v 1.5.0
EOS Utility Update for Windows v 2.0.2

and i think i have successfully changed the owner name in the 1Ds. ... thank you very much, but ....

i cannot open the same drop down menu tab thingy, Option(O) > Camera Settings when i connect the 5D to the same computer (in EOS Viewer Utility).
the cable connection to the camera is again different, but i do have a cable to fit, but .... it is a USB at the other (Laptop) end (yes, i have tried it in all USB ports).

seroiusly dissillusioned about all this digital setup crap ... all i want to do is take pictures !

any further help would be, once again, most useful and appreciated.
kind regards,
david

You may need to download (or load from CD) and install the WIA driver for the 5D.
