What are the major differences between the 380EX and the later model 420EX strobes in terms of using either on the G1? Does the 420 allow the user more strobe options? Does 380EX need more user manipulation than the 420 when used with the G1?

Thanks,

Peter

380 is 4-5 year old technology, less power, head does not swivel and cannot be used as slave unit with 520Ex and also cannot be used as remote flash with the ST-E2 transmitter and also slightly bigger than the 420ex.

If considering flash for the G1, go for the 420EX.....it is marriage made in heaven!

Hello,

I purchased the 420EX on Saturday, and I have to say I am almost happy. I should have read the manual. The salesperson sold me on the E-TTL feature for studio style shooting. But it seems that the 550EX is the only flash that the G1 can support for that feature.

Although I can't complain, the swivel head came in quite handy today for some shots that I had to make for a presentation tommorow. The G1 also controls the amount of burst being supplied during the shot.

If you have the cash go with the 550 otherwise do not hesitate on the 420.

Later.

i don't know why also, my search found this old thread, probably because of the "burst being supplied" line and the flash, but hey, out of curiosity, what was the natural progression of this camera, meaning what is the latest model of the cameras being discussed that have the same traits? thanks - -Fishfool @ The Reef Tank (external link)

They are discussing the G-series Canon cameras. The latest is the G9;
