70-200 f/2.8 L discontinued?

Was sat reading a Canon catalogue or somesuch in my local photography shop today, and looked up the 70-200 f/4 L (non-IS) because I can't wait to get my own. Right beneath it was the 70-200 f/2.8 L (non-IS), flagged with an asterisk saying it was discontinued.

I've not heard anything about this on the forums, and thought the four 70-200mm L zooms were a fairly... important range of lenses. Is this really old news that hasn't really affected the use of the lens, or is it a UK/Europe-only thing? I'm hardly expecting to have scooped this myself :p

In the bag: Canon EOS 350D | 18-55mm (kit) | 70-200mm f/4 L | 17-40mm f/4 L | 100mm f/2.8 USM macro | Speedlite 580EXII
In the pipeline: No idea. Suggestions?

B&H still sells them:

But they do not list the imported version.

Hi

I have not seen the non IS version listed in the UK as an official import in years (if ever).

All the best

The catalog the OP mentioned has had the 70-200 f2.8 non-IS marked as discontinued for a few years now. It's still around, and it seems Canon is still producing them. They're a favorite lens for many PJ's and sports shooters.

From a busienss perspective, Canon would be forcing the consumer to buy the more expensive f2.8 IS version or they're stuck with f4. Sounds like a good business idea, but I can't see them doing it.

Canon 1D3, Sigma 70-200 f2.8, Sigma 120-300 f2.8 (sale), 1.4x converter, 580EX.

I don't think Canon UK imports them any more. They'd prefer it if you blow another £4-500 on the IS version.

could be the f2.8 isn't selling that well especially since there are two IS models to choose from.

I never thought of that. I guess f2.8 and f4 IS is a real tough choice for some, specially since they are nearly the same price.

Well after I buy my 24-70 f/2.8 I'll be saving up for that one. If I can still find it that is.

That is what I'm trying not to do. It will be several months before it happens, so I have plenty of time to decide.

i'd say of the four 70-200Ls this model is the least popular. but the rumor of its demise has been out there for at least two years that i know of!

So do i, but they're unlikely to be "official" UK lenses.

Not that i would care about that if i wanted one :)
