hey guys, I'm using a macbook pro right now for my main computer. I use it for everything - photo editing and anything else I need a computer for. unfortunately, the screen sucks. compared to my 20" dell lcd (which I use for editing) the display on the laptop doesn't display half the colors it needs to to be at all useable for editing purposes. now, at home this isn't a big deal as I can just hook up my dell and use that, but when I'm on the road it's a problem because I can't really edit any pictures that I take because half of the colors don't come out properly. unfortunately, I bought this laptop without checking out the screen first because I figured that apple (which markets to graphics professionals to begin with) would include a decent (if low-res) screen with its professional laptop series. obviously, this is not the case.

what I want to know is if any of you have found a laptop with a worthy screen? one that is useable for editing (high-resolution is nice, but not as important as displaying the correct colors; unfortunately, this laptop's display fails in both categories). I don't care which OS it uses; OS X is awesome, but I can deal with windows and dual-boot with linux if I have to. I used to have a Compal HEL80 (powernotebooks.com, not the most well-known distributor, but compal makes laptops for many large companies), but returned it because of a crappy display, which was replaced by the MBP, whose display wasn't much better. at least that display was 1680x1050.

so, again, if any of you know of a GOOD, ACCURATE (with calibration obviously) display, please let me know. I'm considering selling my MBP to get something with a good display. of course, ideally I'd build a desktop and use my Dell lcd, but I'm in college, and a desktop isn't the most practical computer in the world unfortunately.

if you're still reading, thanks for any help and assistance, and sorry for my rambling :)

BTW, both my MBP screen and my dell lcd were calibrated with a spyder2, so that's not the issue. my display isn't defective either as I have looked at several others in an apple store (albeit they weren't the new LED ones, are those any better) and they all looked similar to mine.

Dell XPS m1710 has an excllent screen. It was the reason I bought it. The inspiron series with WUXGA is good too.

my friend has an e1705 with the WUXGA screen, and while the high resolution is nice, the colors are still not anywhere close to up to par with my dell lcd... are you saying that the xps has a better screen than the inspiron?

It has the same screen. I have both. The video card is different, but both are calibrated and looks excellent.

is that what you use to edit your pictures on? as I said my friend's display really isn't any better in color reproduction than my MBP's display...

It is.

Have any of these devices been calibrated?

Spyder2 Pro here. Very happy with my shots. Wife edits on my old inspiron and has a degree in colour and anatomy drawing from Emily Carr. She's pretty fussy herself.

i take my 22" LCD monitor with me when I have to use my laptop for editing, or even for displaying images during a shoot.

well, I don't really know what to say about that... as I said, we tested both our screens against my dell lcd, and there was really no comparison.

ahhh this is frustrating... haha.

well as stated in my original post if you had bothered to read it the screen is inaccurate, doesn't display many colors, and is low-resolution to top it off.

Rob Galbraith gives a positive review to one of the newer Mac laptops, and then explains how to get better color out of an older model:
