Huge Grass fire this evening. I was able to maneuver and get in between all five Fire Engines. I was able to park on the side of the freeway, and take these pics with cars whizing by. Here are just a handful of the photos I took (Haven't had a chance to really PP them well, or choose my faves).

1-It was really smokey...

2- Most of the traffic was at a stand still, then as soon as I parked, they seemed to start going fast again.

3- There were a total of 5 or 6 fire engines out there today. They were from two districts cooperating to put the fire out.

4- Fire burns and smokes between two Fire Crews. Though wet, the ground manages to keep flames alive here and there.

5- The Captain, surrounded by smoldering ground, is quenching it with water.

6- Did someone try to burn some manties? A child sized piece of clothing, which I had seen aflame, and it was now no longer burning.

7- The Fire Crew's Engineer, regulating the water flow to the grass areas.

8- One of my favorites, his attitude, totally posing for the photo.

Great shots, glad they knocked it down quickly. Think about give a copy to company 3, we never get good pictures of ourselves.

These are great Mario! Love the last one too. You are a brave, brave man stopping on the side of the freeway like that.

OK, the more I look at it, the more I like number 1 also!
Only if that one spot wasn't on the rear tire part of that minivan.

I hear ya, Rich. I have a lot of respect and camaradery with the hose-draggers in my area. These are going to CDs today, one for the Station, and another one for the Union guy (Capt), so they can post them in the website.

It's really fun. And they deserve it. I do this a lot for PDs and FDs. People think firefighters get fat and sleepy, while cops are soul-less SOBs. So through my News Photography, I always try to throw a bone to both, because they're dedicated people who are willing to put their lives on the line -without hesitation- to save anyone else's arse.

If you wear the helmet and T-shirt, my hats off to you, Rich. :)

Thanks sweet Luc for the comments.

#1, I was driving, putting the right lens on the body, trying to find a good place to park safely (from cars and fire), and probably doing 30mph. I knew nothing good could come out of it, but I figured what the heck, at worst I trash them. But I liked this one.

Freeway / Grass fires are dangerous and creepy, because you don't have the gear to stand in the burned out grass like the fire crew does, and at the same time, you can't be strollin around the freeway. So you literally walk a really fine line. I have one from the next fire engine, where the firefighter silohuette plays with the smokey shadows, right between the guardrail and the fire engine. I will dig it up later and post it :)

I remember not long ago a fire looked doomed like this one, but someone kicked the dirt, and as soon as the air came in contact with the burning core, the flame was like a supersized big bird of fire. Not fun at all.

Anyhow, thanks for the comment. Yesterday I needed to do something good, and I feel these pics sort of helped. Sending them to the paper right now.

I agree.

There's something strange yet special about the first one. I can't put my finger on it, but i like it.
