Curious as to what metering mode to use when shooting motorsports?

I'm using center focus, so I assumed partial metering which concentrates on the center of the frame, but maybe this isn't the correct logic.

I've been trying to take a spot metering off the tarmac as it's normally a nice neutral gray in shutter priority mode at 1/100th (for instance)

Note the shutter speed and aperture.

Dial those both in after switching to manual mode.

Take some test shots and check histograms. Do this periodically (and keep a good watch on how the light is changing).

This seems to work, especially when there are white and black cars. You get consistency without the car inferfering with the camera's auto metering.

I'd be interested on seeing how everyone else does this though.

Read the palm of your hand, adjust the reading to -1EV and set the camera there.
