Hey guys - I was wondering if there is any concern with purchasing a Canon refurbished L lens? I found a decent deal, but the lens is refurbished by Canon and comes with a 90 Day warranty. Where is your guy's head at with that? Yay? Nay?

I have bought some refurbs before, but never lenses. And so far I was never able to tell that it was a factory refub or not. Just dunno how it is with lenses...

Thanks, Ollie

If it comes with a warranty, and the vendor has a clear return policy (e.g. B&H) then go for it.

If it comes with some kind of restocking fee possibility, less so.

But refurb from a private seller, no way, because there's no place to go if the glass doesn't work.

The only time I'd buy refurbished is if I get the same warranty as a new unit - if the factory isn't willing to stand behind it, why should I?

To me it would really depend if the place your getting it from is reliable when it comes to returns and customer service.

Thanks guys. It is actually a 70-200F2.8L. I consider the vendor reputable for sure. At least I never had any issues dealing with them before...

Dunno what I will do yet...I just wanted to put out a feeler to see if people are for/against it....Thanks for the feedback!

go for it, you save a bunch of money and if you dont think its right, send it to Canon and get it recalibrated before the warranty is up. i am waiting for 4 refurbs to come in personally.

^^ Thanks Brian!!

Seems like the savings are about $210 bucks over a new one...I realize you can get a used one for 800-900 depending on condition, but you just never know what you are getting. With the Canon refurb, at leat you know where it is coming from and that there was probably some sort of QC before it was send out...Guess I will continue to make up my mind LOL

I like refurbs a lot. They've been out, sometimes had an issue - sometimes not, but have been back to the manufacturer. I tend to think they've had a good shakeout and been fixed. I'm not as keen on the 90 day warranty, but still, with the money typically saved, it's worth it. Buy one of those Mack warranties along with it and you'll still be less than new.

Even though they say there is a 90 warranty I called canon and they said the place where you bought if from has the 90 day warranty not the person who purchases it..But I think getting a refurb from a major company coming straight from canon is probably just as good as buying a new one because they recalibrate it to spec.
