Turn on the G1. Lense comes out, info panel on top wakes up. Okay now lift up the lcd screen and ....... nothing happens. Push the display button...... nothing happens. Don't panic. You will notice that if you rotate your lcd from facing back to facing front, it will wake up. Rotate it back and it goes off.
What has happened is you have a tiny piece of grit or fluff jamming the "lcd off" micro buttom that is in the upper left corner of the recessed area where the lcd sits when closed.
You can get behind this button (G1 instructions only) by removing all of the black headed screws that you find on the sides and back of the G1. There is one under the compact flash door and one under the I/O port door. You also have to remove the silver headed screw that is to the right of the "MF" button of the left side of the camera.
Now that the screws are off, open the lcd screen and move it all the way to the left. Now gently wiggle the black cover on the back of the camera and it will come straight off.
At this point you have voided any warranty you might have had left. Mine was expired anyway.
Locate the grit that caused you all this trouble in the first place and send it back to the sandbox. Make sure that the "lcd off" button moves freely and close up the camera by reversing the steps above.
Lastly congratulate yourself for saving a $200 service call to Canon and spend that money on more CF cards..... and beer of course.
