So are the dealers buying the kit from Canon and then breaking it up and selling separately? They must be making some money there, I wonder if Canon know? Just like multi-pack foodstuffs, you aren't allowed to sell them separately are you?

Hi Anke..... sounds like that is exactly what is going on. Although to give the dealership the benefit of the doubt they may be braking up kits to help the customer get a better deal...:lol::lol:

Sorry....

there would also be a sticker on the lens that says refurbished. the plain white box means the lens was a take-off from a 5d kit.

Rather, a 30D kit.

why do you think that? i've seen guys selling 24-105s that were taken off of 5ds but not off of 30ds....are 30ds actually packaged with 24-105s?

if so i would find that odd.

The best confirmation would be to call (or take it to) a Canon Service Center near you. They can tell you about your lens from its serial number. They can also tell you if the warranty is valid.

It's a 28-135 IS, not a 24-105L.

I was at local shop and they offered me kit split version 5d body for around $180 less then 5d body only price.

I have seen this several times at very reliable shops. The kit contains 2 items, camera & lens, and they get it much cheaper than the two parts separately.
I have no glue regarding warranty cards, but I don't assume that there are "kit only" cards.

The different kits, except for the APS-C kits with kit lens, come with white boxes for the lens, and brown boxes for the body, AFAIK, and a very colourful outer box.

A dealer I know couldn't get any standard kits, just before the summer hols, so got kits with macro lenses, and sold these separately. he just hopes he can sell the macro lenses, too, at some stage... :).

BTW, he still had the best deals around for bodies... :)

Kind regards, Wim
