That's an insanely good price on a nice piece of glass!

I was on the verge of buying this lens, but decided to do some research first. After reading a variety of reviews (many not so good), I changed my mind. I'm now saving my pennies for the 10-20 (Sigma), which gets excellent reviews - but of course is quite a bit more. Amazon has it for around $468.00.

This is a stunning wide angle and from owning one the only downside is size and weight. Personally, I found it almost impossible not to get a decent shot with this lens. On a par with the 17-40mm L and at that price well worth a punt. Any problems then send it back ;-)a

Dang it all if my kid didn't need a new bike first. Got to wait on the lens. Seems like it's legit though.

Postage is a little cheaper through Amazon though (~$9 less I think).

the lens sold on amazon at $269 is the IF version. there's a DF version that's much more expensive. DF is sigma's designation for dual-focus. The focus ring does not rotate on the DF lens when focusing, and allows for full time manual focus.

i also notice most stores no longer sell the IF version. sigma4less, BH and various other vendors dont seem to carry them. perhaps this is a small window of opportunity to pick up a cheap alternative to an ultra-wide for cropped bodies.

The lens sold at Amazon/Cameta - and now sitting in my camera bag right here - is the 15-30mm F3.5-4.5 EX DG DF version identical to the current Sigma 15-30mm model listed on Sigma's site http://sigmaphoto.com …s.asp?id=3242&navigator=1 (external link) . This model is the same one that's currently being sold for $400 and change elsewhere.

This lens does not offer full time manual focusing. I don't believe that DF is actually intended to provide full time manual focusing at all but only a means from keeping the focusing ring from rotating during auto-focus. According to Sigma:

DF (Dual Focus) System
The DF (Dual Focus) system disengages the linkage between the internal focusing mechanism and outer focusing ring when the focusing ring is moved to the AF position. This system provides easy and precise handling of the lens, since the focusing ring does not rotate during autofocusing. The wide focusing ring also enables easy and accurate manual focusing.

hmm.. the amazon listing showed the IF version for the one priced at $269. could it be that they made a mistake? or perhaps i couldn't find the DF at the same price?

The Amazon photo, text and model numbers in the link above (which I used to buy the lens) indicates that the $269 one is the current model and has DF. Actually, I have not been able to find another version of the Sigma 15-30 without DF anywhere. I know there are two (or more) versions of the Sigma 17-35mm but can't seem to find a non-DF version of the 15-30 in any reviews or listings.

really? it reads this on the title for the product:
Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG IF Aspherical Ultra Wide Angle Zoom Lens for Canon SLR Cameras

but if it's actually the DF version, then might as well buy it! u can even sell it at a higher price if you dont want it. haha
