Even with a smaller lens you can get some interesting bird images. Get down or up to their level if possible. Your first image would have been more interesting if you got down at the level of the geese. This could ( depending on what is acrross the way) also enhance the background. Same for the other two images. If you were down on the bank of the river and got low, the perspective would be much more interesting.

Keep shooting, practicing and have fun with it.

The best learning about wildlife Photos can be done with shorter lens

What they said James. I am not a great photographer by any means but I started with the 28-135mm and practices getting as close as I could. Then I moved up to a 70-300 and now use a 400mm f/5.6.

The right gear is important but for bird photography, stealth is every bit as important. You'll have birds fly off. I still do when I take one step too many. (Unfortunately, I don't know which step that is until I take it! :lol:).
