I just got back from FEDEX sending my 30D off to the CanonService Center for repair and/or cleaning. About two weeks ago it started showing a small black triangular object in the bottom right of each photo I take :(

I don't believe this is sensor dust? It looks too regualr in shape and too dark for that.

Canon said 7-10 days to repair/clean. It was purchased new in Oct 2006 so the warrenty is still in effect.

Here is a sample of the issues at a 100% crop.

Wish me luck;)

Almost looks like foam. From light seals or some such. But what do I know...I don't build 'em, I just use 'em.

Nice pants.

NOT!

Doesn't look like a big deal...Maybe not sensor dust, something pretty close to the sensor.

Anyway, am sure Canon will resolve it.

Did you give a shot at cleaning it yourself before you sent it off? I'm sure Canon'll fix it no worries :)

Yeah. That looks like an easy fix with a sensor brush.

I did not try to clean it myself. As it was under warrenty and also I am convinced something from within the camera body came loose and landed on the sensor I decided to gamble and see if Canon will clean/fix it under the warrenty. The fact that I have a second body to use in the interim made the decision easier. I don't need the 30D back until the 22nd of September when I have an all day wedding to shoot.

Best of luck. I recently sent my Xti to canon to have a similar mystery object checked out and it came back yesterday with that problem solved, plus a good cleaning and some electrical work; all free of course. They were really vague about the object in the pics and only said they "overhauled the imaging elements" in addition to the cleaning and electrical work. Took about 7 days from the time they received it to the time I had it back.

Menocu,

Thanks...that is encourging feedback. I have had one other experience with the Canon service folks and it was a very positive outcome...they fixed my dRebel XT over the Christmas holiday period last December in under seven days :)

To me, it looks like a small object on the sensor. I've had a small plastic bit from the barrel of a lensbaby fall in to the sensor and it looked like that.

Next time consider just blowing it off first/cleaning the sensor. It may save you time and money.

I think Jim already knows it would be better to send it to Canon. I have the same issues with dust on my 5D sensor and I blow it out like crazy, but if it gets to the point I can't do much more for it, I'll send it to NJ as well. I have friends who I would trust more than any local technician, but Canon's been good to me so I trust them.

Good luck, Jim. I'm just got up and finished breakfast. Dave Terry was wonderful to work with last night. He took amazing shots as well and I will link you to his site when he gets the pictures up. :) Be home tomorrow night. Thank heavens!

Suzie,

I took my new B+W Kaesemann CP out for a spin this morning...mounted on my 10-22MM EF-S. In a word...amazing! I wish I had it for last Wednesday. It only took me about 10 minutes to figure it out. We have beautiful cloud cover today and I took about 50 test photos...the skies are so blue with the filter mounted. I mounted it on top of my B+W UV MRC and I only got a tiny bit of vignetting at 10MM. I am going to try it with my 17-55 and my 24-70 next.

As this is my thread...I'll hijack it and post a sample with the 10-22 and the B+W CP :D
