I know that this thread is a couple of weeks old but I just found the Epson P3000 at Amazon for $399 plus a $100 rebate, bringing total cost to $299 with free shipping.

p-5000 is absolutely an amazing tool. screen is insane, interface works just fine, and it's great for selling yourself to interested onlookers as you shoot.

it is damn expensive....but it's freakin awesome! never looked back after handing over the credit card.

I have the Epson P-3000 and love it; the only thing to bear in mind is that if you shoot RAW and take a lot of photos, it does fill up pretty fast. Also, make sure to clear it out occasionally to make sure that it's got the maximum space for when you go out.

It's pretty safe to assume the P-3000 and P-5000 can't read the 40D's RAW format?

It'd be a big surprise if it could.

I can honestly say that my P3000 can read the 40D and 1D mark3 raw files.

I ended up ordering the P3000 from Amazon. It is coming in this week, hopefully today. I will get to play with it next week when my family and I go on vacation.

What it's doing is reading the embedded thumbnails. Unless a manufacturer radically changes internal formats so there's no easily-detectable thumbnail JPEG, it should continue to let you see one. BUT, because it's a thumbnail, there's a limit to how far it'll let you zoom in on it.
