the catch is the focus ring broke but focus on auto fine. i never use the focus ring on my lenses anyway.

If that is busted, sounds like the lens might have been dropped, I would be extremely careful of there being fractures in the glass on the inside, or scratches. Also, like a car, it maybe just that now, but who knows later on down the rod, the AF might give out.... Just becareful ;)

I had a 17-85 and it's a good walk around lens for a crop camera.
If you have a situation when the lens hunts, and can't autofocus due to lack of contrast, you will have a problem without manual focus capability.
Otherwise the price is good.

I'd be worried that besides the focus ring that there might be something else inside that is broken that would give you problems down the road.

Personally, I wouldn't touch the broken lens. You have a set of quality gear - why add a lens with a dodgy history to your collection? Could be false economy.

You have to ask yourself what kind of drop/hit would cause the focus ring to break like that.

Then wisely back out of the deal...;)

I say not worth the risk Raymond. The lens has been dropped, and may have internal problems not readily detectable, especially if you can't hold it, touch it, etc....

Step back please... I'm armed with a camera...

The answer to every question like this is directly relative to how much the money is worth to you.
For some people £100 is just walking around money, and losing it wouldn't be a big deal. For others, it would be a lot of money.
Simply ask yourself how upset you would be if the lens failed shortly after you received it - not very upset, or a lot. There's your answer.

Ok...............I went for the Tamron 17-50mm 2.8 instead. Came to the conclusion that i probably can't sell it later but i can at least sell the Tamron should i upgrade. And F/2.8 would be nicer than 5.6
