Tonight was the big night at Canadain Forces Base Trenton (Ontario); the first of the new C-17s was due to arrive. In Canadain service the formal designation will be C-177. Just a few minutes past 8:30 p.m. the crowd got excited as the C-17 came into view. By this time the light was fading fast. I set my camera at ISO 800 and shot a few at 1/30 at f/5.6. Both shots are with my EF-S 17-85 at 50 mm. I wish I could have done better but the lighting was just not favourable. It was still exciting to be there and here the cheer that went up. Here in Canada, getting new military equipment is a big deal.

One of my favorite planes. One was on final to RNO a few days ago and went straight over my head, just amazing something that big can be as agile as it is.

Very nice! I saw it depart from the factory here in Long Beach but did not have my camera.

Cheers,

Thanks for the comments. Canada ordered four C-17s, so three more to go. Evidently the second is scheduled for delivery in October 2007 and the final two in 2008. For what its worth Australia ordered four as well, Great Britain is scheudled to end up with five.

It was just brought to my attention that evidently the opposition party (Liberals) in Parliament is suggesting that the order for four planes should be halved as two will be enough! Of course this is the same Liberal party that cancelled the EH-101 helicopter order a number of years ago for which we paid hugh penalty amounts to break contracts that were already in place. We are still waiting for new helicopters for the Navy (shore based and on frigates). The old Sea Kings require many hours of maintenance for each hour in the air. From time to time they can only be used if it is an emergency (search and rescue is sometimes an emergency; lol).

I know this isn't a political forum but I thought some might appreciate the latest news.

One had a rough landing then was shipped back to USA on a deck of a container vessel.
It wasnt cocooned properly and arrived as scrap.
Our military isnt allowed any sharp toys.;)
I like it like that.
