My wife got this pic of our dog. She has no idea how to use my camera but got an amazing shot.

I wouldn't call it an amazing shot. Like with any subject, you need to get down to their eye level to get a real good shot. I see this similar to parents taking pictures of little kids when standing over them instead of sitting or laying down on the floor with them.

Rules were meant to be broken. I've got twin 18 month old boys, if you get on the ground with them their all over you like white on rice. You learn to improvise and still come out with better than snapshots pictures.

Nice pic of a beautiful dog, good lighting also.

Rules of photography are the baselines to get good pictures. Getting down at eye level with subjects should be worth the effort to get the shot. The world doesn't need more pictures of kids looking straight up at the camera.
