Confirmed: 40 D has 14 bits RAW

Following with the info about the specs of the new Canon 40D, I can tell you:

Confirmed: 40 D has 14 bits RAW

Archives type: JPEG, RAW, RAW + JPEG & sRAW+JPEG

The aproximate size of the archives will be:

SMALL JPG
Small/Normal : 0,7 MB
Small/Fine : 1,2 MB


MEDIUM JPG
Medium/Normal : 1,1 MB
Medium/Fine : 2,1 MB


BIG JPG
Big/Normal : 1,8 MB
Big/Fine : 3,5 MB


RAW : 12,4 MB

sRAW (small RAW): 7,1 MB

40D is going to be 12MP as well? if RAW is 12mb that's generall 12MP, no? - the site says 10

yeah wonder if it's 10 or 12 mp... will make a diference in detail when cropping

10,1 Mpx - 1,6 crop factor - 14 bits RAW

OK, thanks. May be worth checking the XTi specs and seeing what Canon said they would do.

No. If the numbers are correct, it's the 14 bits that's causing larger filesizes, not having more than 10 megapixels.

Can someone tell me what's the point of sRAW other than the obvious being able to shoot at lower file size. But somethings' gotta give right?

The best I can come up with (and this is partly speculation) is that S-RAW is a byproduct of live preview. Canon's precedure for producing live preview is to produce a lower-resolution image from the sensor either by not utilizing all available pixels (say, 1 of 4 pixels is used), or by pixel binning where 4 photosites are combined to produce one pixel.

Anyway, the same smaller image that is used to give live preview capability is used to produce a smaller RAW image.
