If you are about to drop $1100 or $1600 on a lens you probably know what length you need. My personal stuff:http://www.flickr.com/photos/jngirbach/sets/

JeffreyG "my bits and pieces are all hard" More info | Aug 12, 2007 16:13 | #5 Also I just sold my 70-200F4 ...and I thinking if I am going to get 85L ..can I get 70-200 F2.8L ...how is that sound ? If you are suggesting to use the 70-200 f/2.8 instead of the 85L, then be aware that the 85L is 2 1/3 stops faster....a huge difference in DOF and low light capability. The 70-200 is of course much more flexible for focal length. Since weddings are usually devoid of fast action, the 70-200 f/2.8 IS might be a useful telephoto compromise. Sure it should be OK on a crop also although the FL might be a tad bit long for indoors except if you have a bit of space or just want to do head/shoulder shots. I do not do weddings so cannot advice there. 1D Mk III - 100mm 2.8 Macro - 24-70mm 2.8L - 70-200mm 2.8L IS - 500mm 4.0L IS - 430EX, 580EX II, ST-E2, Stroboframe, Quantum Turbo

If you have FF then by all mean, go with 85L Canon 5D II, 7D | 16-35L II | 24-70L | 24-105L | 50L | 85L II | iMac 27 | Redrock Micro DSLR Cinema Bundle | Elinchrom Ranger RX-AS Kit| Elinchrom Digital Style 1200RX/600RX | Turbo SC |

If you have FF the 85L would probably be the most useful. But ultimately its like everyone said, look at your shooting habits and sibjects... Then get both!!
