I think you forgot to constrain the aspect ratio when you resized. It's smooshed.

It's definitely got potential, but I think you should repost so we can see it at its full potential.

What are you using to resize your photos? If your using Photoshop try Image>>Image Size then type the size you want and Photoshop will keep the original aspect of the photo. Great photo by the way :)

Great start with your 5D! I would avoid rather bright backgrounds, since the tend to be blown and take away from the subject. Nice looking kid!.
