I have spent the last week reading about setting up a studio light, and now am more confused than ever where to start. Cos I have never done this, I dont want to buy the wrong equipment .. and to start with I just want to a simple set up so I can take portraits of kiddies / people.

Can anyone help me what I need to do. And I dont even have a separate flash so need even one of those from what I am reading.

My budget would be $1k which would include everything to start with.

There's no reason I know of that requires a separate flash with studio lights.

The best I can do for you is tell you that I use Alien Bees and I am quite happy. They are one of the better units for the price and they still believe in customer service. Check out their packages. http://www.alienbees.com/ (external link)
