In June, a 17-year-old boy survived but was seriously injured when he fell about 75 feet onto some rocks at California's Mount Diablo State Park. He had climbed over a handrail in order to fake a fall so that his pals could capture the plunge on video to put on his MySpace Web page. [San Jose Mercury News, 6-12-07]

I read a book about the Grand Canyon that described several incidents where people did essentially the same thing - even a hundred years ago.

Did they capture the shot? Is it up on the web?

To be a real idiot, you need to make sure your attempts are not only on film, but posted on the Internet at your instruction.

I dunno. This was just a news item. I'm sure the name was withheld because of his age.

Personally, I'm torn about his survival. Yes, he's a kid (albeit nearly an adult), but then, does the species really need another idiot?

Every summer we kill off two or three folks on our waterfalls here...there is some strange fascination with walking out along the top of the falls...then they get swept over....and rescue teams have to hike miles and miles in to the place..usually to do a body recovery. Occasionally, we get the odd survivor...but they typically end up as either vegetables or quadriplegics. Their buddies make sure to capture the event for posterity though!
