Brian, long ago when I was in college, the craneflies around here had larvae that looked like that, but were aquatic.I think the head was different as well.

The ones I've seen are definitely not aquatic. They usually live underground (grass seems to be preferable.) During early autumn, it is not unusual to see Starlings combing a lawn for leatherjackets, as they are known around here.

I can remember a bowls match a few years ago when the grass was thick with emerging crane flies.

Great shot BTW Brian. I'll go for 3 as my favourite.
