So I was a bit excited to get my 100mm in the mail today. I got home tore open the box, threw it on the 30D and found the closest flower. So here is my first ever shot with my 100mm, and also my first macro shot ever. Now that I've got that out of my system (ok not really) time to sit down and learn a bit about shooting well with it. This is going to be fun.

No PP other than resizing.

You did a great job of focusing perfectly on the tiny center of that flower, given the narrow depth of field you had at that wide open aperture. Did you take the shot handheld or with a tripod? That's steady hand if it's handheld.
Kepp on shooting and post some more!

I shot it handheld and it quickly became apparent why so many use a tripod. :) I couldn't imagine being any longer and trying it though. Tried to at least compose a shot for my first and I'm decently pleased with it. Not knowing just how thin it was going to get wide open and that close I almost closed it down a bit but I'm happy I didn't. I've been busy reading the macro section here to get some tips and I'm sure I'll I won't be able to resist firing off a few more shots before hitting the sack tonight. :)

Well you've found out something already about macro - the amazingly thin DOF :)
excellent focus. One of the reasons most macro shooters use MF all the time- AF would have trouble working out what you were trying to focus on unless you only used the centre focus point- then that tends to ruin composition.
