:D

Don't be daft. I guess I'm just wearied by reading countless rumours at DPR.

The only evidence I have of it is that all the local camera shops here can not get any more, and they have been told not to expect any more.

I work for Ritz Camera and we can still get them.

Nikon has a press event coming up around the same time as Canon. I'd bet a D200 successor is in the works to compete with the 40D launch.

the D200 is the start of the pro line.

No it ain't - it's prosumer same as the 30D.

Some folk try to big it up into being a baby D2X but it's still just a prosumer with some "added value" (or not) bells and whistles.

Not that I particularly care Keith, (I shoot Canon) but I did buy and use the d200's for a while and they are well above (in practical use) the 30D in pretty much all but the high ISO noise performance.

The bodies are a large step ahead of the 30D IMO.

In the persuit of total contentment, Canon does not help :)

Re: prosumer tag. If you can make money with it it's a pro camera. Anything more than that is pure marketing fluff.

I think that one of the biggest reasons that there was some strong outcry when the 30D came out was that it wasn't the proverbial "D200 killer" camera. Nothing wrong with the 30D in my experience, but it wasn't notched up high enough to give the D200 a run for it's money. Granted, it wasn't priced as high either.

Canon could have put more bells and whistles on the 30D, even while keeping the (still excellent) 8.2 mpx sensor.

Nikon also has a wider line up. D40, D40x for entry, D80 advanced amateur, D200 entry pro and the D2hs and D2xs top of the line. I don't have any problems calling the D200 entry pro, go handle one and see for yourself.

60D, Canon 18-135 IS, Sigma 10-20 hsm, 24-70 2.8 hsm, 70-200 2.8 hsm, 430EX II, and all the other stuff that goes along with it.

I agree with "we care because..." Most of us have invested heavily on our Canon equipment, and buying a Noink right now, at least for me is out of the question, unless it will massage my back and...

Vs Canon's XT & XTi which compete with the 2 D40's. The 30D sits, I believe, somewhere between the D80 and D200. The 5D sits in a unique spot, that doesn't have a real parallel at Nikon. The 1D2/1D3 and 1Ds2 sit around the two D2 bodies. I think that Canon and Nikon both shoot for the "holes" in each other's lineup. In fact, I recall some heated discussion a couple of years ago about Canon's gap between the then 20D and the 1DII - which Nikon seemed to fill with the D200.

And we care because....!!!

we care because Nikon is the 2nd biggest camera company in the world, after canon.

If canon start losing the next model that nikon brings out canon will try and beat.

When Nikon Dieds, Sony or Fuji will buy them up. But that's Not going to happen because Nikon is own by the one of the largest Bank in Japan. But if Leica Dieds Sony will buy them up just for the Name.

Besides the DSLR war have just begun and Like all war only the strong will survive. Just take a look at the SLR of the 70's and you'll see that by the end of the 70's only a handful survived.

I believe history will repeat itself. If Nikon don't begin developing Sensors and support chipsets they aren't going to survive this time around. The most likely possibility is Nikon will ally them self with Kodak and IBM for their future sensor supplier and most likely that is why the D200 has been discontinue because Sony is no longer providing Nikon with the latest Sensor technology saving it for their own upcoming flagship BODY and Possibly a new lens mount to accommodate a new line of Zeiss Built Pro Lenses.
