This hoverfly has been ID'd by the resident Flickr expert as

Xanthandrus comtus. Must admit I thought it was a slightly odd Didea sp.
Was flying above my head in the leaves of an apple tree. Apparently fairly rare in this country until an outbreak of them this year.
Bit more info- apparently distinguished from Didea sp. by the dark scutellum.

Hi Brian great shot well done finding a new hover
I have seen quite a lot of different hoverflies this year but not one like that

Great shot/capture especially given it was an over head shot, I hate them gives me 'Jip' :lol:

Congrats on your new find, I've seen a number of these flying in & around a huge Beech Tree nearby but I just can't capture em, YET gimme Wasps any day :lol:
