While searching the "Attachments" area of my User Control Panel for a photo that I had previously posted, I noticed that a number of my photos have been downloaded more than 1000 times.

For what purposes, other than C&C, do you download photos from POTN?

To view them, of course. You can't see an image in your browser until it's been downloaded. Just because it says your photo has been downloaded 1000 times, doesn't mean people are actually saving them for some reason.

I think that is telling you how many times your photo has been viewed within a thread.
In other words when you view a page full of photos, all those images which are stored on the server get downloaded to your computer's temp storage, which count as downloads.

I'm only guessing, but I'm probably wrong.....

EDIT: Thomas beat me to it.

Watch the status at the bottom of a browser window when you open a thread with pictures in it. You'll see something like "...waiting for http://www.pbase.com/images/1349/3.jpg" or something. It's downloading your images.

Oh, I see. Just my lack of understanding of what's going on when a photo loads in a thread. Thanks for the clarification.

Come on guys, quit lying to him. Admit the truth, they're being sold to a micro-stock house, and several of them are getting rich off your work.

And now, back to your regularly scheduled leg pulling.

Oh, oh, Belmondo. Looks like someone's on to your little "get rich really slowly so no one notices" scheme. I think you better pack it in and hightail it out of town, like really soon, before they send the feds after you.
