1D mk3 CF card Speed?

Hi everyone,

I just got my new 1D mk3, and I'm going to be getting some new kit to complement this beauty!

I currently have 1 4GB Ultra2 Sandisk CF card. I'm planning on getting at least 1 or 2 more cards. Which card speed should I go for to maximize the writespeed from the Mk3 to the card? I'm not too concerned with transfer rate, just the write rate of the Mk3.

Thanks!

Sorry to hijack this thread, but it seems most of the gurus of 1D mk3 are in here...

May I ask what speed of CF card is best to obtain optimal performance with the Mk3? I'm currently using a 4GB ultra2 sandisk CF card, and I'm getting another as a backup.

the fastest you can buy.

Will it take advantage of UDMA 300x cards?

Maybe I wasn't clear enough... I'm looking for the best value for money against performance. I'm not paying for the latest ducati cards, but I'm willing to pay more to let the Mk3 clear the buffer faster. Is there a clear difference between the Extreme 3 and 4 lines? or any other brands are good?

Write rate and xfer rate are relative...Get 260x on up. There are faster cards than the Extreme IV too. Shop around. Look at www.mydigitaldiscount.com (external link). I get alot of my cards there.

I don't think we've seen any actual tests yet, but with the 10FPS if you use it you can fill a buffer pretty fast.

I'd look at the RG Database for the MkIIn and base the purchases off of that for now,.

Even the MkII takes advantage of the faster cards, so it should be a good indicator of the cards compared. The difference is that I expect the MKIII will take more advantage of the fastest cards, but this is only gut reaction at this point.

For the MkII, the best bang for the buck are Ultra II and Ridata 150X IMHO. (depends on how you read the chart and what your idea of bang for buck is, and how cheap you can find those cards)
The ATP scores amazingly well, but I'm not sure of the quality of that card,. and don't see them available at most of the places I shop.

I have Extreme 3 & 4 cards...the write speed off the 1DMKIIN & 1DMKIII are not hampered by either. I shoot RAW files.

EDIT: The extreme IV card handled a 26 shot sequence...not that I would ever actually do that, but I was curious as to its capabilities.

I recently got Transcend 2 GB, 266x Ultra CF card from Adorama. Its the fastest card tested to date and at very little price. I got 30d though so I cannot test the speed.
Its Compliant with the CF3.0 specification + Built-in hardware ECC technology

Was shooting pics of my son's new airplane today. I shot about 2500 images, RAW and Small Jpeg. I used Transcend 266X cards (which I also use in my 5D).

The cards come from NEWEGG.com Cost $129.95. I also have some 150X cards and the 266X are REALLY about 2X as fast. They definately download the buffer a lot quicker.

I can say that the Mark III does fill cards up a heck of a lot faster than the 5D. I adjusted the burst rate to 5FPS on low and 8FPS on high, still the cards go by fast. The 21 shot buffer (per the meter) fills up pretty fast even when shooting short bursts.

With the 266X card, I did notice that there was some definate difference in the way it works. I counted 3 shots before the meter started to move. Maybe there is lag or something, I don't know.

I can say I'm not really happy about the autofocus on the Mark III. Personally (flame me guys), I think that I get better results on the 5D. (I'm at about 6000 clicks on the Mark III and probably 75,000+ on the 5D.

I can say the DAMMMMM battery in the Mark III is awesome. 3700 shots and I still have 57% left (which means about 8600 shots in from the battery (3700 shots and used 43% of battery)). Really awesome.

get yourself a 12gb extreme 3, it'll let you shoot longer ;)

according to the specs, mkiii is 50% faster than mkiin, so extreme 3 speeds are about the peak speed/price ratio

Thanks all, I've gotten the 16-35 mk2 just now, and a new 4GB extreme 3 to go along with it!

4gb is not that large considering the mkIII's raw file size.. good job on choosing extreme iii though, it should be the best value

Yes I have tried that a couple times shooting raw with Extreme IV cards.

I think 4 GB is just about right. I have one 8 GB Extreme IV but have noticed a significant decrease in performance when the card is filled beyond 6 GB. (So I am actually trying to find someone in Denmark that would trade for 2 4 GB cards).
