Hi Everyone found a new butterfly on Monday :D , Small Copper not rare or anything but first time I,ve seen one.
Tried a different site an old sand quarry
He was a difficult subject only wanted to perch on the ground and I had to crop the first shot as the closer shots did not have enough depth of field due to him sitting with wings half open.

second shot cropped for compo shame the background is poor would have been a nice shot if he had perched off the ground.

A pair of gate keepers

A bonus, did not expect to see dragonflies here the only shot I've got this year of a southern Hawker this one is a mature male.

Excellent shots as usual Pete - Especially the Small Copper, they can be very flighty and for some reason unsharp mask always makes them look scruffy, you've nailed it just right.

Thanks Dave I was really pleased to see the Small copper.
I've been using smart sharpen as recommended in the Scott kelby book it does seem to work well,
Pete

Great shots Pete. Think #2 is my favourite. We can only work within boundaries of the insect's habitat, and if the little so-and-so likes sitting on the ground...:D

Good set Pete. Small coppers seem to favour yellow daisy type flowers so look for them on ragwort or fleabane. Once they're nectaring they're much easier to approach.
The pair of gatekeepers is a surprise as females are only fertile shortly after emerging and they've been out for some time.

thanks Laurent I love the colours on Southern Hawkers
thaks Mark the first ones my favourite too was really made up with this shot even though I had to crop it they are a great little butterfly
Thanks for the info again Eccles I always seem to learn something when you reply to a post , I will be going back to the site if I pick a sunny morning a should find one nectaring . Did not know that about the gatekeepers theres a lot of them about this year I see a lot every time I go out.
I seem to be torn between the dragonflies and butterflies but I'm trying to get a nice shot of each of the butterfiles in our area should keep me busy for a while :D

Beautiful series of shots. The colour of the small copper is quite striking.

Your Southern Hawker also a lovely shot - he too is showing off his full colour :-)
