I am now realizing how much I was missing out by not using a flash until now.

I shot this guy today in my garden. I managed to get under him, to let the sun light him up from behind, and using my flash I lit him up from the bottom.

He was really docile. I managed to get 20 really good shots of him, it was hard picking a favorite. I even have some shots of him sitting on my finger.

I couldn't get the whole butterfly in the frame because of how close he was to my lens. I appreciate any critique you wish to give.

I really like this shot and must say it is one of my best ones yet so far. I hope you like it as much as I do.

good idea to use fill in flash

Thanks Pete.

I have this shot of him too. I like it because it is really sharp when you zoom in, and I got most of the butterfly in focus. But I'm wondering if you and others think it is too dark? It seems to be missing 'something' to me.

Shot 1 is a cracker, and with only a little tweaking, shot 2 can be turned into something pretty good too. I've adjusted the levels and added a bit of sharpening. Hope that's ok? It shows up some jpg artifacts so you'd really need to tweak the original for best results.
BTW it's a painted lady.

Thanks eccles you worked a miracle. I need to get some good photo editing software when I get home.

I'm on holidays, driving to British Columbia and will be back in 2 weeks. I have my camera, but no macro opportunities yet. But I hope to find some insects I have'nt seen before.

good shot on the first one. the second one seem a little busy with the leaves in front maybe crop it a little on the bottom. then again what do i know still learning.
