If you can live with off camera manual flash, the most fundamental and likely the best way to start is with a long cord and a hotshoe adapter for the 430EX.

Use this approach until you get traction with the basic concept.

Then if you later want to venture to radio slaves, or other ways to fire the off camera flash, you can relegate you fundimental cord as the needed backup to more complicated (and far more expensive) off camera systems.

Enjoy! Lon

thanks for your answers, folks.

well, now i got another one, and maybe more:p hope i wont bother you too much.

I am interested in the Canon Off Camera Shoe Cord 2, and does it support ETTL2? What's the difference between canon off camera shoe cord 2 and 3? If i have one of them, do i need the other kind of adaptors or devices to support off shoe flash with my 430ex.

They both support E-TTL II. Cord 3 is just the newer version, weather-sealed and from what I've read it's built a little more robust.
