Hi everybody, my first "real" post here.

I have done some "painting with light" photos with a flashlight on the beach.
It was great fun and now I want to do some more.
But I would like to get a remote, since I don't have one.

It's for my Rebel XT, but it doesn't have to be a "entry level" remote. I won't mind spending a bit more, if I can get one I can use with a better body, when I one day (soon) update.

I was looking at TC80N3 http://www.amazon.com …ics&qid=1187161822&sr=8-4 (external link)
Is that overkill?

overkill because it doesn't work with the XT ;)

the connector for the wired remote on the XT is a 2.5mm sub-mini stereo jack, so it uses a different remote than the XXD series cameras.

the one that you would want to work for the XT is the RS60E3

or, if you want, you could go to the POTN store and buy their remote that is compatible with the XT, as it has a 25 foot extension cable... as opposed to only 2ft on the RS60E3

if you want wireless, check out the RC1 remote for the XT... it works pretty well if you're in front of or to the side of the camera, but not the best from behind (as the IR receiver is in the front on the grip)

It is worth every dime. I use it with my 30d bodies. sh0ebox is partially correct, you can use it with the XTI but you need this http://www.werbeagentur.org/oldwexi/TC80N3.html (external link)
I would get this remote as it has a load of possibilities and if you end up getting a 30d or any of the upper bodies you can use it with it. I think it is a must have part of the gear.

A radio wireless is a good option - camera operator position doesn't matter. I got one from gadgetinfinity.com (a HongKong operation) for 29.99 including shipping - I noticed in my latest outdoor photography mag adorama has what looks identical for $99.00. Downside, it only works with the XT - but it delivers! I even used it to take some 'property rights' shots of kids driving through a friends woodlot when they thought no-one was looking...no court worthy, but parent worthy!!!

Can you do bulb with it? That is the usual disadvantage of the wireless remote.

For that XT, the RC1 is what you are looking for.

Yup. First press opens, second closes.

Thanks for all the replies.

I think I'll get the RC1.
I looked at the RS-60E3 from the POTN store, but I need the remote by the end of the month and the store is sold out right now.

I chose the RC1, because it's pretty cheap and I can do bulb photos and use it for self portraits.
One concern is that I have to be in front of the camera. I also shot macro, so bugs might freak out, if I can't stay behind the camera.

It's not a big deal, if it's needed I will buy another remote.

another suggestion is to buy the RS60 E3 and then go to this store and buy the 12 foot 2.5mm extension cable for like $6 shipped: http://www.yourcablestore.com …ension-Cable_p_21-99.html (external link)

since i have the RS60 E3, i've been considering picking this up myself just to have a longer cable as i can tell 2ft is not going to be enough for some of the things i might encounter :)

this way, you can still do self-portraits (i'm assuming 12ft is long enough) although it might be a little harder to hide the remote with a cord and all... but also you don't have to worry about being in a certain area to activate the shutter as it's tethered to the camera (and no worries about ever replacing batteries either!)

One more quick question.

Does the RC1 and the RS60 E3 have the same fuctions? Is it just the wireless vs. cable that's the difference. I ask, because I'm not sure if the RC1 can autofocus for you, but the RS60 E3 can.

Just read some reviews on Amazon about RC1 and RS60 E3, that left me more confused than before. Some people love the RC1, others hate it. It seems the RC1 can to tricky sometimes and seems to shine best then you are right in front.

Now I think I'll get the RS60 E3 and maybe buy an extra cable. (thanks for the link shOebox).

yeah no problem! i picked the RS60 E3 based on the fact that it's basically fail-proof, since it's directly tethered to the camera. i didn't want to be limited to an IR signal which can be blocked on its way to the IR receiver, and is kind of hit-or-miss when it comes to shooting from the side/behind the camera... so i think wired is the best way to go. it's also great that the cable is extendable :)
