From the link you provided:

Equipment: You want to go as light as possible. Bring a camera and a wide range of lenses from a wide-angle up to a 300mm lens if you have one. Bring plenty of memory cards and/or film, extra batteries, a cleaning cloth, possibly some filters and a strobe. Feel free to carry along a lightweight tri-pod.

What do you currently have?

What do you like to shoot? It plays a big part in determining which lenses you would find most beneficial.

If you have to ask what lens you need to buy, you shouldn't buy any. When you need to take a picture that you can't because of your lens selection you will know exactly what you need.

Since you are going to attend a workshop, I would wait until after you have found out what the instructors recommend and shown you why they would choose it.

The 70-200 f/4 works for me for that. A walk by the river
But I agree that you should wait a bit. You may be better off with something else.

I would go with a tamron 17-50 or Sigma 18-50 for the wide end and I second the 70-200 f/4 for a tele. Depending on the deals you get that should be under $1000, you could possibly have enough to get a few memory cards and if you find a really good deal on the lenses possibly a used 430ex.

The ad says: bring wide angle to telephoto. So bring that. He's a photojournalist - so he'll probably stay away from normal and use tele and superwides. You can rent lenses at BH and other places.

In the end it depends on your shooting style. I've shot my vacation there mostly with a 28mm lens and it could've been done with a kit lens or a rangefinder, which wouldn't intimidate the people as much.

If you're ok with opening exe files, you can view the slideshow here (external link).

I'd guess that 85% of my PJ work was with the 20mm & 105 mm lenses. (Film format). Maybe 10% with the 50mm f/1.4

Best advice ever - it really needs to be made into a "sticky."
