I am hoping that someone that knows the area, or has been there, could help me out. I am looking for the best choice of lens or lenses for an upcoming trip to Savanah & Charleston in October. I have the Tamron 17-50 & am thinking about renting a 70-2004L or a 24-105, or should I go with a prime?? Not sure which would be more appropriate. I don't want to carry around alot of heavy gear, & prefer not to have to switch out lenses every other block. Thanks a bunch.

What are you going to be shooting? The lovely homes along the waterfront, the beach, seagulls, boats, the waterfront, people or all the above? I only use a prime lens if I know exactly what and where I will be shooting and at what distance, I hate to zoom with my feet. Since you have a 17-50 and are happy, then I would say the 70-200 f/4 looks like a winner. Since you already have 24-50 of the 24-105 covered by your Tammy I would scratch it.

actually looks like you're covered according to your list. If anything I'd look at a 400 prime other than that you're takin care of from 17-300mm

Most likely we will be touring the houses & any plantations. Not exactly sure. Was thinking that the 70-200 would get me better quality pics than my 70-300. Plus it is a constant f4. Will I need a wider lens that the Tammy for architectural shots?

Anything wider the 17 you will be fighting distortion. If you must, and I doubt it, you may have to stitch.

That Tamron should fit the bill, and then a 24-105mm would be sweet. It's a favorite around here. You want to able to go wide, and then have some medium telephoto. What camera?

Step back please... I'm armed with a camera...

I have a 10-22 on my crops and no distorted edges can be seen. The 70-300 you have is a great lens and it's been called the cheap mans "L" I had this lens and after debating between it and the 70-200 f/4 and reading many pages of reviews it's really a sharp lens. I traded up to the 100-400 from a guy here and up untill I got my 70-200 2.8 I missed the lens pretty bad. I still feel you're covered, instead of getting a lens get some memory and a grip with spare batteries and or a flash if you don't have one already.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I have only been using the 70-300 for close ups of song birds (on a tripod) and the results are fabulous!! I think I will stay with the lenses that I own & for the 50-70 range I will zoom with my feet.
